    Science Thinking Routines:
    1. Labs and Demos - POE: Predict, Observe, Explain
    Make any lab or demonstration an exercise in critical thinking by having students predict the outcome, debate/justify the predictions, and vote on the predictions before they see the outcome of the experiment. This is especially powerful if the outcome of the experiment is unexpected.

    1. Labs and Demos - POE: Predict, Observe, Explain
    Make any lab or demonstration an exercise in critical thinking by having students predict the outcome, debate/justify the predictions, and vote on the predictions before they see the outcome of the experiment. This is especially powerful if the outcome of the experiment is unexpected.
    2. Critical Thinking and Science Videos - I Notice... I Wonder... I Already Knew... I Was Surprised By...
    Give students the tools to think critically about videos, animations and simulations we watch to illustrate concepts in science class. On whiteboards, on a handout as a graphic organizer, or in a collaborative Google doc, students take notes in each of the four categories while watching videos.
    Extensions:
    a) Play the video with the sound off the first time. Have students complete the "I Notice..." and "I Wonder..." sections while you play it silently.
    b) Compare two different videos by adding a category like "What was accurate / inaccurate in each video?"
    Example:
    A collaborative note my 4U Chemistry class made while watching a series of videos about modern atomic theory:
